Amazon Kindle Gets Library Access
Sep 21, 2011
Good news for Kindle fans that love to read! If your library is among those now offering Kindle books, you can visit their website to have the ebooks delivered to your Kindle device or app. The length of time that you can borrow the ebook depends on the policy of the library where you’re borrowing it.
Amazon also extended Whispersync technology to library books which means your notes, highlights and bookmarks are always backed up and available the next time you check out the book. There are currently over 122,000 libraries in the U.S. and only 11,000 currently offer Kindle rentals so it may take some time before you see them on your local libraries website.
Sugarloaf Mountain Yellow Trail
Sep 18, 2011

Yesterday I went on a hike around Sugarloaf Mountain, a 1,282 foot tall mountain and park located roughly halfway between Germantown, MD and Frederick, MD. There’s some important history that took place at Sugarloaf Mountain during the Maryland Campaign of the American Civil War in 1862. In the early 1900′s, businessman Gordon Strong bought the land and later in 1947 he set up a trust fund that maintains a trail system and other tourist facilities at Sugarloaf Mountain. In 1969 the mountain was designated a National Natural Landmark due to its historical and geographical significance. Today it remains an admission-free park, privately owned by Stronghold, Incorporated.
The mountain itself is an example of a monadnock — an isolated hill or small mountain rising abruptly from gently sloping or level surrounding land. It appears to be either an outlier to the east of the main mass of Catoctin Mountain, or a root remnant of the ancient Appalachian land mass.

The mountain contains four main trails, blue, purple, white and yellow. The trail that I chose to take was the Yellow Trail which circles the perimeter of the mountain. The yellow trail is about seven miles and took me roughly three hours to complete. After parking in the main area located at the cross roads of Comus Rd and Sugarloaf Mtn Rd , I hiked through the mountain entrance and made my way up the street towards the Yellow Trail entrance.

The Yellow Trail isn’t the best maintained trail. I noticed two or three big trees that had fallen that had not been cleared making it difficult to pass throughout the trail. I also noticed that it was difficult to stay on the correct path due to the lack of yellow blazes on trees and other tracks branching off of the trail which make it confusing. That being said, it was still an enjoyable trail to hike on as long as you pay attention to the markers. The first part of the trail (markers Y1 – Y7) head north and seemed to be the least accessed part of the trail. After the Y7 marker there is a fork in the trail and you can choose to go to either of the two peaks.
You then continue west on the Yellow Trail between markers Y7 and Y9 until you come to and cross over Mt. Epharaim Rd. and begin traveling south on the trail parallel to the road. It was from the area between the Y10 and Y11 markers that I was able to see the only view of the mountain while on the trail. (See picture below)

The Yellow trail then crosses back over Mt Epharaim Rd. south back towards the main entrance to the mountain.

I actually only saw one other person on the Yellow Trail yesterday, probably due to the overcast weather.
Toilet Monster Prank
Sep 17, 2011
I’m a big fan of playing pranks on unsuspecting guests. Growing up, when my friends and I had sleepovers, we would sometimes play a prank where the first person that fell asleep would get shaving cream on their hand and a tickle on their nose. Fast forward ten to twenty years and I’m still playing pranks on co-workers and friends, although not as much.
Toilet Monster attaches to the inside of the toilet bowl with suction cups and surprises guests as they attempt to relieve themselves. This is possibly one of the funniest gags that you can play on someone. If it wasn’t so pervy to video record guests in your bathroom, I’d just invite friends over and prank them all day in order to get their reaction.
Weverton to Gathland State Park on Appalachian Trail
Sep 11, 2011

I decided to go on a 10-mile hike along the Appalachian Trail in Maryland just north of the West Virginia border near Harpers Ferry, WV. I started off by parking at Weverton Road at 10:15, a parking lot with about 30 spaces, and located about a hundred feet away from the trail. I started north along the trail. This is a very heavily traveled section of the Appalachian Trail because it’s located close to a few big cities. This area of the trail contained many large rocks to hike over and some of the steeper areas that I would encounter during my hike. Once I climbed to a higher altitude I came to the Weverton Cliffs / Appalachian Trail North sign. I continued north on the trail towards Gathland State Park.

About an hour into the hike after the Weverton Cliff sign, I saw a sign for the Ed Garvey Shelter. The Appalachian Trail has hundreds of shelters all located within roughly 10 miles of each other but this one was particularly nice. I decided to check it out and ran into someone who stayed there the night before. After hanging out for about 5 minutes I decided to go back onto the trail and continue on.

Now along this section of the trail, as I mentioned there are many rocks. This makes hiking the trail more difficult than if it was all dirt. Along the rocky trail, I saw some things I don’t see every day. I found a couple of different species of mushrooms growing along the trail, some red and white and others all white. I also saw some interesting species of bugs. While walking between the Ed Garvey Shelter and Gathland State park, there are some pretty cool boulder formations along the right side. There is also a clearing which I thought was a fire break in the mountain but was actually a clearing made by AT&T where they laid underground fiber-optic cable.
I finally reached Gathland State Park around 1:00 and was greeted by some buildings and structures owned by George Alfred Townsend, a Civil War journalist in the late 1800′s. There’s also a large stone monument dedicated to the memory of Civil War correspondents. It was a good place to eat lunch and relax for a few minutes before I decided to head back onto the trail. In the park there is a picnic area with a roof in case of a rain storm which is where I ate.
At this point it was time to start heading back down south. Going back south on the trail, the time went by a lot faster. Why is it that the trip going back is always faster than the trip there? I decided to check out Weverton Cliff before I went back down the mountain which is just a short blue blazed trail that goes a few hundred feet East. Weverton Cliff features gorgeous views of the Potomac River just south of Harpers Ferry. The snapshot below was taken by a nice lady that I met there.

I finally reached my car around 4:25. The hike was a little over six hours, ten miles and I had some achy feet. Overall I felt very accomplished and can’t wait to get out there again.
Combine Your Lego Sets To Build New Ones
Sep 11, 2011

Do you have a big bin of Legos from various sets that you’ve collected over the years? Now you can take that mess of random parts and turn them into other Lego sets. The website rebrickable will let you type in the Lego sets that you have and tell you what sets all those parts can turn into. It will also tell you which parts you will need to complete the sets. I tested the site with two castle sets that I have and the results were mostly other castle sets, which makes sense because of the parts. This may not be useful to all lego fans but it could be very useful for some.
Whoa, power laces! Alright!
Sep 8, 2011
One of the things that always stuck out from the Back To The Future movies as epic was the way they perceived the future in Back To The Future Part II. As if a flying, time-traveling Delorean wasn’t enough, the movie also features hover boards and power-laced shoes. And although hoverboards may take a little longer than 2015 to see the light of day, it looks like power-laced Nike ‘Air Mags’ are already a reality. 1,050 of the these self-lacing technology shoes will be made available over the next ten days on eBay with the money won from the auction going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
Update: Sep 10, 2011
So it turns out that the shoes up for auction and sale by Nike DO NOT actually have power-laces. They do have a Nike logo that lights up for up to four hours on a single charge. Should we be impressed Nike? My $30 pair of L.A. Gear sneakers that I bought in 1987 lit up with every step I made.
Seriously though, these shoes do have the following going for them: 1) The money goes to a good cause, 2) You know collectors are going to go crazy for these in the future, and 3) Nike has done a pretty amazing job at marketing these shoes. Check out the new video promotion that they just put out featuring Kevin Durant (Pro-Basketball player), Christopher Lloyd (Played Doc Brown in the Back To The Future movies) and Bill Hader (One of the cops in the movie Superbad):
Kurt Cobain Jaguar Guitar
Sep 6, 2011

Fender has just released the Kurt Cobain Jaguar guitar, modeled on the battered 1965 Jaguar that Cobain played with during the early-’90s with Nirvana. I don’t play guitar but I’m a big fan of Nirvana. Judging from what I have read about Cobain, I’m not exactly sure about how he’d feel about having a guitar named after him but I don’t think he’d like it. Cobain never liked being in the spotlight as the center of attention. I remember watching a video interview with Kurt on what life was like after he started making millions. He said that when he was a struggling artist he’d often visit pawn shops to try and find a gem of a used guitar and then scrape together some money to buy it, making it very valuable to him and a memorable experience. When he became popular and rich, he could buy any guitar he wanted which meant to him that it had no real meaning when he made these purchases. Regardless on if he would have liked it or not I think it’s still good that he is being recognized as such an important artist.
Amazing Video Game Painting Artwork
Sep 3, 2011

A gentleman named Mikaël Aguirre (Orioto on Deviant Art) has created some amazing video game artwork based on actual popular games from the past. The example above is a piece of his work showing Donkey Kong Country. Perhaps this is what video game graphics may look like in the future. Some of his other artwork includes paintings of Mario, Kid Icarus, Metroid, Zelda, Sonic and others. There’s also a link to the Photoshop technique he used in creating these images.

Spy Mouse iPhone Game Is Fun And Cheesy
Sep 1, 2011

Cheesy in a good way! The reason I like this game is because if Tom and Jerry and Metal Gear Solid had a baby video game, it would be Spy Mouse. Spy Mouse is EA’s latest game designed for the iPhone. It’s a fun and addictive action game that puts you in control of a mouse as you try to get the cheese and escape from the room through the mouse hole before the cat catches you for his next meal. Some rooms even have two or more cats that throw ninja stars! Over 72 levels of action in all. What I like the most about this game is one, it runs very smooth and two, the control in the game is great. Many iPhone games suffer from bad control due to the screen size but in Spy Mouse your finger creates and outlines a path that Spy Mouse will shortly after follow. The music is also very Austin Powersish Groovy Baby! Yeah! Spy Mouse is currently 99 cents at the app store.

HP WebOS Touchpad $99 Firesale
Aug 22, 2011

Late last week HP announced that they’re discontinuing their tablet WebOS Touchpads as they are focusing on other aspects of their brand. Because of this, HP felt it was necessary to drop the price of their Touchpads from $499 to $99 on the 16GB version and $599 to $150 on the 32GB version. This being the cheapest price for a tablet computer ever, the internet has been a buzz on the Touchpad. HP’s inventory on their website sold out within hours and when other stores including Amazon, MacMall and sellers on ebay priced the Touchpad at the new lower price, they also instantly sold out.
Here are some of the technical details on the $99 HP Touchpad:
- 16GB internal storage
- 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core APQ8060 processor
- 9.7″ diagonal LED backlit touch display with high-gloss finish, scratch-resistant coating
- Front-facing 1.3MP camera and digital microphone for video chat
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless
- Beats audio
Trip to Cancún, Quintana Roo Mexico
Aug 12, 2011
This summer my wife and I took our honeymoon to Cancún, Mexico. This was my first time leaving the USA in my life so this was a very exciting experience. Now similar to how the USA is split up into 50 states, Mexico is split up into 31 states and Cancún is located in the eastern state of Quintana Roo located on the Yucatan Peninsula.

The first thing we did when we landed at the airport in Cancún is we waited in line to be accepted into the country. The line was exceptionally long and took nearly an hour to get through. After another brief delay caused by Mexico Security wanting to search through our bags manually, we wondered over to the currency exchange area. At first I only exchanged about one hundred US dollars into about one thousand pesos. The thought of having a thousand dollars of any currency seemed like it would be more than enough until I realized just how small of a distance that a few pesos will get you.

Once we left the aeropuerto (airport in spanish), the first thing I noticed that was different about Cancún was that a lot of people speak Spanish and ride motor bikes there. We shuttled over to the resort we were staying at called the Westin Resort & Spa. This hotel was one of the farthest most southern hotels on the strip. After we checked in we went up to our room to relax due to the long trip.

The next day we decided to venture downtown to experience the Cancún culture. We took the city bus up through the hotel district and into town. We then went to Market 28, a market located in Cancún that features over forty shops where locals sell things such as t-shirts, jewelry, and homemade goods. Negotiating is expected in the market. Never pay full price for anything there. We bought a beautiful amethysts and silver ring for $60, brought down from the original price of well over $100. After our venture into the market, we decided to walk towards the Wal-Mart just so that we could say that we’ve been to a Wal-Mart in another country. We never did make it to the Wal-Mart because of the heat but instead checked out the Burger King for lunch and then took the bus back to the hotel district where we shopped and ate merrily until dusk.

The next day we went on a bus tour to Tulum and Xel-Ha. It took roughly an hour and a half to get to Tulum from Cancún. Tulum is the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city serving as a major port for Cobá. The ruins are situated on 12-meter (39 ft) tall cliffs, on the Caribbean Sea. Tulum was one of the last cities inhabited and built by the Mayans, and at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries. It is one of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites and is a spectacular and beautiful site to visit. Only being in the United States my whole life you can imagine that standing near buildings that were built and inhabited by humans over 600 years ago was quite an epic mental experience.

After Tulum we traveled about ten minutes north to Xel-Ha. Xel-Ha is a water park where guests can engage in a variety of water activities including swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, zip-lining, jumping into water via twelve-foot cliffs, and other fun activities. Xel-Ha also had an all day all you can eat and drink buffet. Corona beer was included but I stayed away from alcohol due to the naughty thoughts dancing in my head of mixing alcohol with snorkeling. After that it was back to the hotel for more rest.

On our final full day, we decided to venture over the seas to Isle Mujeres (Spanish for Women Island). I’m not sure why they call it Women Island as there were many men there too. Isle Mujeres is located just a short 18-minute ferry ride away from the Cancún hotel district. Once on the island, tourists can visit the dolphin park, shop, visit the Mayan ruins and take in the 360 degrees of beautiful island views. There are many golf cart and motorbike rental places on the island. We rented a golf cart and used that as our mode of transportation for about three hours as we explored the island. Afterwards, we took the ferry back and went to dinner in La Isla, a fun and upscale outdoor mall located in Cancún.

The trip to Mexico was a great experience for me because it made me realize that there’s so much out there than what I see everyday in the Washington, D.C. area locally. The trip made me want to visit other countries in the future so that I can experience other cultures.
Here are my top 12 tips for visiting Cancún:
- The number one tip of course is don’t drink the water. I tasted it out of pure curiosity and it didn’t taste like what I was used to. Always buy bottled water which can be found everywhere.
- Learn the bus system. Each bus trip will cost about 8 pesos which is much cheaper than taking a taxi and buses come every couple of minutes.
- Bring lots of sunscreen if you’re going in the summer. We went in August and Cancún is much closer to the equator than most of the United States.
- Learn some basic Spanish words, even if you just need to learn hola and gracias. (hello and thank you). You may encounter times when people don’t speak a word of English.
- When buying gifts in shops, always negotiate unless you’re in a generous mood.
- Ask the hotel what they recommend for you to do. Most of the hotel workers are locals that know the best malls, tourist activities and restaurants.
- Don’t forget to tip. Tipping is expected in Cancún for things like taxi driving, restaurant servers, and musicians playing for you. Remember, if they serve you and you take a sip, then they deserve a tip.
- Spend a day outside of Cancún. The area is rich in culture and history and you should experience all that it has to offer, not just in the city but miles away. There are many tour busses that will take you to other areas on day trips.
- Keep in mind that some of the toilet systems outside of Cancún are not as sophisticated and you shouldn’t flush toilet paper but instead discard it in a basket.
- Load up on snacks and water at gas stations and large markets and then bring them into your room. Some of the hotels are a complete rip off and overcharge for everything.
- Don’t freak out that you won’t be able to find food that you like at restaurants. Cancún will have tons of food similar to what you’d find in the states.
- Buy something locally made to bring back with you. I bought a beautifully hand-carved Mayan stone chess set for much cheaper than it would cost in the states and the locals will appreciate the support.
Lamp Chair Is A Space Saver
Aug 12, 2011

When you think about it, the majority of the time a lamp is located above or next to a chair or couch. Why? Because chances are that you will need light when you are sitting down no matter what you’re doing. This is a great idea for that reason among another which is that this is a big space saver. In a world where we have separate things for just about everything that we do, it’s nice to see something like this. Take for example cooking a meal. To prepare for the meal you will need to get out the ingredients for the meal, the measuring cups, serving spoons, cutting board, knives, etc. You’ve used ten items before you have even started cooking.
Now I understand that it’s not very practical to have one gadget that does everything (unless it’s an iPhone). There’s a reason that people go to rock concerts with multiple rockers and not just one guy standing in the middle of the stage being a one-man band. But I’m all about smart designs like this and will continue to feature them on this blog because of my love for them
Ultracynic – Nothing Is Forever Lyrics
Jul 26, 2011
I saw you every morning
As the sun rose through the sky
The first thing I would do each day is gaze into your eyes
Our future was together however long that was
But somehow things didn’t quite work out
We both had been denied
But nothing is forever
How long is forever
Nothings lasts forever
Nothing is forever
We never were separated
We couldnt be split up
We promised we’d share everything, the smooth and the rough
We seemed to be so similar and really thought we’d last
But all that stuff dont matter now
It’s all in the past
It doesn’t matter
No it doesn’t matter
Cuz nothing is forever
Nothing is forever
Nothing is forever
How long is forever
You used to say without me, you couldn’t survive
Now I see those statements were nothing more than lies
And so I try to forget the times we had
Forget all about them good or bad
No matter if you think that you’re really together
It’s important to remember
That nothing is forever
Nothing is forever
It never is forever
Nothing is forever
Nothing lasts forever
Nothing is forever
It never is forever
Nothing is forever

Office Jerk App Is Hilarious
Jul 19, 2011

I’ve probably downloaded about 100 apps in the past year and there aren’t too many that make me laugh like this game. The point of Office Jerk is, well it’s pointless really but it’s enjoyable an funny. You throw different items at the Office Jerk and listen to his nerdy noises and grunts that he makes as he gets drilled. It’s similar to the game Paper Toss but with less strategy and more comedy. I believe the game is currently being offered for free in iTunes. If you’d like to lose the advertisements in the game then you will need to pay.
